Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the principal ingredients of cannabis. Unlike the most common one, tetrahydrocannabinol, it doesn’t get you stoned. It is, however, most healthful.

CBD’s legal status in the United Kingdom

The cannabis plant from which CBD originates is utterly illegal in the United Kingdom, but CBD was never covered by the 1971 Misuse of Drugs Act. It is illegal in some countries, among them, New Zealand.

Better claim it’s a dietary supplement

Hence there are no restrictions on CBD products that make no medical claims. If any such claim is made, it’s necessary to register the product as a medicine with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). The MHRA began to regard CBD as a medicine in 2017.

The licence

After more than a year, a company on Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands betwixt England and France, was recently issued the first licence to grow hemp (like cannabis but not psychoactive) plants for the extraction of CBD. It’s run by a one-time Royal Marine commando and two others.

David Ryan, who was a commando for six years, worked as a firefighter in Jersey for a decade where he happened upon Kevin Mars and Blair Jones. They came up with the idea six years back. Looking into the combustion of various building materials, they discovered hempcrete, a fire resistant building material made from the woody core of the hemp plant. As such, it’s sustainable.

After ceasing work as firefighters, these gentlemen established Jersey Hemp. Three years later, the government of Jersey granted it a licence. Ryan, the chief executive, remarked that, previously, his company had to import CBD; consumers and therefore retailers will prefer it to have “strong British isles provenance.” Jersey Hemp’s ability to grow its own will “massively reduce our costs.”

Dr Chris Callaghan, the company’s chief science officer, specialises in breeding crops that are resistant to air pollution. He is now working on a method to produce CBD oil of the highest quality. He hopes to concoct an app that will enable consumers to scan a code on their product and then see the field the hemp was grown in.

74 acres – heavens

It has been estimated that something from 30 to 40 tons of hemp will be grown a year, of which three to five percent will be CBD. This will take place at Warwick Farm, which began as a small plot in 2017 but now covers 74 acres. The benefits to Jersey were spelt out by Lyndon Farnham, its minister for economic development, tourism, sport and culture: it will allow the island to assume a role in a fast-developing sector – this market is growing. It’s hoped that Jersey will become a “centre of excellence.”

Research by the Centre for Medical Cannabis found the UK market for CBD products to be worth £300 million a year, perhaps growing to £1bn by 2025. Customers rave about Jersey Hemp. Buy its CBD oil here.
