If you make a Google news search for “cannabis” here in the U.K., there isn’t a day that goes by where you wont see some sort of cannabis arrest or raid that seems to have ended some 20-something year old in prison. Today was no exception to this continuing malfeasance by British police forces. At 8:40am this morning (14/08/2015) police in Leyburn, North Yorkshire raided a house that was suspected to be used to grow cannabis in. The police obtained a warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
They arrested a 42-year-old man on suspicion of cultivating cannabis after the officers found a marijuana plant inside the house. That’s right, just one plant. An entire police raid – planning, gear, wages – has just been used to find ONE cannabis plant. But wait, it gets even better.
The police also arrested a 21-year-old man on suspicion of possession of cannabis after a box containing a small amount of cannabis was found. A “box” and “small amount of cannabis” should not warrant a police raid which could see this young man’s live ruined.
With a petition calling to legalised cannabis about to hit the 200,000 signature mark, it may seem as though there may be a light at the end of the tunnel for cannabis users in the UK. However it still looks to be a long way off.
